The latitude of Europe corresponds with that of Canada and the northern part of the United States.
Its extent from east to west is around 2,800 miles, about the same as that of the United States.
If Europe were moved westward and placed over the United States, so that Cape Matapan would be over Raleigh, the Strait of Gibraltar would be over Santa Fe, and Paris, on the most northern boundary of the United States.
North Cape, the most northern point of Europe, is the same latitude as the most northern point of Alaska, in North America. The city of St. Petersburg is in the same latitude as Cape Farewell.
Europe is remarkable for the number and importance of its inlets, island, and peninsulas, and consequently for its great length of coast line, which facilitates trade and navigation.
